thoughts?

[livejournal.com profile] koshka_the_cat pinned this redingote and it popped up in my feed...and I'm pondering something. You see I'm so focused on nursing things at the moment that I'm looking at the world through a very different lens. And I'm wondering if this was just dressed on the mannequin horribly crooked OR is it possible the original wearer had very bad scoliosis? The hem seems straight while the bodice is very off, which would make sense if a hem was balanced off of someone's even hips and then put on a symmetrical model.

I found two fashion plates of this style too!

The second looks like a redrawing--I'd love to see the original :)

My guess is badly mounted. It barely fits, and it wouldn't surprise me if that's a new petticoat--the open skirt looks like it's about an inch off when you ignore the petticoat.

Isn't it a great dress though? I'd probably do this style if it didn't mean more fabric. I'm determined to just use stash for this project. Well, excpet I need new button molds. That doesn't really count though...

It's gorgeous! But, I think the blue corset is just placed wonky because it's too big for the dress form.

From the actual website (translated from Italian):
Surcoat female formed for the most part from a fabric in yellow silk and another in blue silk (bodice area). The decoration of yellow fabric is formed by slender branches of daisies, pomegranates and berries that are followed in accordance with a meander. The bodice in blue silk is formed by a simple decoration and vertical lines. Border in blue silk.

and the back picture which looks normal to my eye:

I think it's just that the proper right side of the bodice is wrinkled up, pulling the waistline out of place. The dress form is probably not covered with any kind of stays, which would make it hard to dress.

I was scrolling up from the bottom, and honestly, I thought this was from my Costume Snark community. It looks like they pinned a blue pot holder smack in the middle of the stomach to pretend like there was a stomacher.

Yeah, something is definitely off here...
