So yesturday [livejournal.com profile] curiouschilde and I went on a little fabric shopping trip to the philly fabric row, MY first visit down there.

We started around 11 by the time we made it down there and just started doing both sides of the street hitting up all the store. Our first stop was Maxie's Daughter. Amy found this GORGEOUS mint silk taffeta, when she asked how much it was the guy said 7.98 we practically jumped out of our skin and said "we'll take six!" Then we did one side of the street, moved the car, ate lunch, did the other side of the street. I was having Zero luck finding the two things I needed: Pink silk for my quilted petticoat and Black silk to make a skirt for a bustle dress.  One store we went in had an old man who I'm pretty certain had an accident in his pants! Sooooo stinky. We got out of there fast. Then we started going back to the early stores to ask if they had pink silk. no dice. apparently pink non-sheer silk is REALLY hard to find?!? who knew! I only need 2 and half yards! As a last ditch hope we went BACK to maxie's daughter, as soon as we walked in the guy was like "omg I'm sooo heartbroken I made such a mistake!" we look at eachother very confused..."That was SILK" "umm that's why we were talking about how much we love silk while you were cutting it..." "It's supposed to be $35.00 a yard!" "hmm well that sucks,....okay gotta go!" He really wanted us to offer to pay the difference, that was clear, but we sure as hell can't afford that, and we'd already put it back in the car! So whoopsie, it was an extra great deal.  Then we left fabric row and stopped by Delicious Boutique which is the storefront for corsetmaking.com and picked up some busks we had ordered.  Then using Rob's snazzy GPS we found a new Jomar. And omg it's the Jomar of my dreams!!! It's soooooo much bigger than my local jomar!!! And we're not in there two min when we make a bee line for the silk and find a gorgeous heavy black silk taffeta! SWEET it's 5.99 a yard. Then as they roll it out to cut it it has little stickers on it marking minute flaws, i'm talking end of a thread flaws nothing I can't cut around and they don't show on the other side. But amy asks, "can you do any better on the price?" So I got Black silk for FOUR DOLLARS a yard!!! I was hopping I was so excited!

As we were leaving Jomar we noticed a wig store and pulled  Uturn to see what they had to offer. OMG It's my new favorite place it was HUGE and VERY reasonably priced. Amy got a big long curly wig for under 25. It was just fabulous. I got a set of clip on sausage curls that I'll use for victorian things now that my hair is shorter. Head 2 Toe for anyone in philly who needs hair

Then I came home and drafted a corset from the Your wardrobe unlock'd instructions that seems to fit swimmingly, I'll buy some fabric for it at work today. I need some strength fabric.

So all in all a great day

Sounds like a fabulous day and I'm so sorry I had to miss it!

Yeah, I have to say I've had a bad experience at Maxie's Daughter. The old guy was such a snob to me that I'd never go back. And they wonder why all the fabric shops down there are closing one by one. Try some customer service!!

Was it the Jomar near the Target in South Philly? I used to like the Jomar on I street, but it's now half the size it used to be - such a shame!

It was the one on Whitaker St. I don't remember a Target.. but who knows.. there was so much traffic.

And it's so true about the customer service. Some places are great.. and then.. well.. they stink and close down. It's sad.. I've always had such good experiences with Maxi's Daughter.
