I've been trying to figure out what to make for the annual Ren Faire trip this year for months. Doesn't help that work has been crazy so I haven't really been able to focus on it. My costume mojo just felt totally blocked. So yesterday after inventory was finally over I spent three hours just browsing portraits online looking for something. I contemplated something tudor, I REALLY wanted to make a plate dress but we're talking less than a month here. This puppy is gonna need to go over my existing underwear.  Also I gave myself permission to not hand sew...Yeah I know sad that that requires much soul searching to let go of hand sewing everything. Anyway my tendonitis has been REALLY bad and hand sewing just sounds so painful

But back to the fun stuff. I finally found a portrait that got me excited!

I just love the simplicity, the elegance, and hell she's got one great story! I'm not sayin' I'm gonna go play BEING her, but someday the potential is there. Anyone got a toddler I can borrow to be James I?

So having decided what I wanted to make I surveyed my fabric options. Of course I'm limited on something basic like black, I do have one 8y yard piece of black silk taffeta I bought with Amy at Jomar for $4.00 a yard that was earmarked for a bustle gown. But I decided I didn't really want to use my silk, even if it was a bargain on a ren faire dress, I'm saving it for something SUPER special and impressive. Looking at how dark the dress is and the lack of shine I instantly thought of a dark velvet or a nice fulled wool (remember it's August...yes I'm crazy). I headed off to Jomar to see what I could find. I scrounged up these options 1. Rayon velvet 6.00 a yard, won't work too slinky I refuse to flatline an entire gown. 2. Lovely black wool 9.99 a yard too expensive. 3. less lovely wool 6.00 a yard, possible...or 4. Heavy black silk, $2.50 a yard. All their silks were half off and this one was the only one at 4.99 to begin with. How often is silk the far and away cheapest option? I love Jomar. (yes I did test it and it is silk). I bought 8 yards
.
you can also see a possible trim option I picked up at Joann's. I'm not in love with it. Still trying  to figure out exactly what to get.

And so it begins.
