Ever wonder where I get my sense of style

I went splunking in the hat box looking for something head-like to wear to Longwood Gardens with mandie_rw this weekend and while I found a suitably boring hat I also re-discovered this hilarious one. It came from my maternal great-grandmother who was supposedly a very chic woman. (By the time I knew her she wore mostly orthopedic shoes). I had forgotten all about it after resucing it from the dress-up box when I first got into this funny dress up habit.

LORDY I need to clean that mirror...at least there's evidence for Rob and my good oral hygiene...if not our mirror hygiene.


Anyone want to hazard a guess in what decade velvet nipple-shaped hats were cool? I admit I'm sorely tempted to make a dress to go with said absurt hat, I just have NO CLUE what that would look like!

Either way it gave me a good chuckle.

Awesome hat! It's a youthful style, the elf/pixie look. Very hard to find now, because they weren't high fashion. Do you have label pictures, and what material is it? It's definitely 30s, mid 40s at the latest.

It says "Duby New York" and the other is "Lazarus Columbus" I know Lazarus was the department store she went to.

Hmm! Those labels/style look a little later than I was thinking; any chance for a clearer picture? Also, when was she born? I may have to do some searching! It's still unusual. :D

She was born I think in 1896 if I do my math right. She and her husband were the first of the family to move from the country into the middle/upper class. He worked his way from driving trucks for Kroger to being a senior vice president or so the family story goes. So I know there was a certain concern with appearance from them.

Okay, I learned something! The pixie style was indeed a juvenile one for a long time, but that's not the only time. I found several late 50s/early 60s hats with very similar shapes. And that is perfect with both the material and the look of the labels. Here are some similar examples:

If you ever want to donate that to a museum, the Ohio State Historic Costume and Textile Collection is actively seeking anything with that Lazarus label since they're local. Or anything else you have from her from Lazarus. I can't tell you how often we've begged the local bluehairs for such things :D
