After putting off trying this sucker on for the better part of the day I sucked it up and tried it on. I HATE first fittings. I have this ridiculous anxiety that it's not going to fit, it's all going to be horrible etc etc. And these fears are valid, it's TOTALLY HAPPENED!

But after Rob's hockey game finished I no longer could come up with a valid excuse to avoid trying it on ( I even did all the dishes! that tells you how creative I was getting), so I carefully took it off Polly with 9 billion pins in it, suited up and even more carefully slid it onto me.

I swear we're not pigs, I have a very small apt and piles just seem to appear somehow.

Anyway it fits! well mostly. After much fussing I realized what it really wanted was a dart at the waist. I have some vague memory of this being period, and whether it is or not doesn't really matter to me right now, that's what makes it fit. So that's what it's getting. Now I just have to go through and SEW it together. Much though showing up with a dress completely pinned together would be fun...

I think I may make the back pleats narrower, I know the width is fine historically I'm just not sure I like it aesthetically as much. I shall ponder.

I would take the same amount of fabric and make the back pleats narrower, but deeper with the excess fabric from these pleats. I like the volumn of them, but yeah, they need to be narrower to suit your nice narrow back. Show it off, it was a fashion statement to have a narrow back.

well I'm not sure I'd go so far as call it narrow..but I think I like the look of slimmer pleats.

I think it looks great! And, having lived in a VERY small place for, like, a decade, I know the evil of those magically-appearing piles all too well and can totally relate! ;)

It's just the things that don't have a place to go! they just seem to get moved around..and in fairness that's mostly Rob's office which is his problem :-p

Yup, that waist dart it wanted - period, you're right. Now you can sleep soundly, haha. ;)

And woo hoo, for fitting! It's definitely looking good. (I see you with your long skirt panels! Clever woman!) With the back pleats, it'll help keep them under control too if you put that horizontal line of stitching a couple inches from the top. You don't see it on the earlier dresses, but it's on the dresses from 1760 on...maybe in the '50s, too. Too lazy to get up and check my books, natch.

I was just going to say pretty much this, so I'll just say what she said!

YAY! I love when what the fabric tells me is what's period! WHEW! and yeah Mandie's the complete reason my skirt panels are so long...I was planning to put in that horizontal stitch line, just hadn't gotten there yet :-)

It looks lovely! I'm almost jealous that I don't have the proper undies or a dummy to drape francaise right now. I'm excited to see the final gown.

And isn't it heartening when you try something on and it fits right?
