Things I have learned today

1. My Store manager can track leaking coffee all over the entire store and completely not notice. and not just a little. A LOT hiraimi can vouch for me.

2. It's not possible to gather 208" of cotton down to 34" so I have a waistband with a 2" overlap.

3. Next time I try to make a 208" skirt (1860s petticoat) I should probably warn the husband to clear out if he doesn't want to hear me invent new curses. That was the most awkward and unpleasant sewing experience I've had in a while.

4. I really really REALLY need to clean my sewing room.

Flat pleat the skirt, then gather it.

wow, that's a lot of width! what size is your hoop? i usually do about 180" and i have a 108" hoop.

what stitch are you using to gather it? gauging should allow you to get it down if you take nice big stitches.

ummm that's a valid question and the answer is I forget. It's not huge somewhere in the 110" range I think. I just got a sweet deal on some 104" wide fabric and I wasn't going to figure out doing partial widths so it ended up as two straight widths. I think it's turned out okay.

Are you trying to hand-gather it or machine-gather it? I've had no problems getting 180" into 27" with loads of room to spare, but only when hand-gathering.

oh machine gathered. It's just a rough petticoat (I serged most of it together) so I don't want to take the time to hand gather. My dress skirt will probably be stacked pleats or I'll hand do those gathers.
