Tonight instead of my old lady self watching some wheel of fortune our local ABC station ran an actually interesting little half hour documentary about the Yellow Fever epidemic in Philadelphia in 1793. I'm watching and suddenly I burst out laughing and Rob had to come see what was wrong...

They had generally okay costuming..but clearly they let the actors dress themselves. Even Rob could clearly see her hat was backwards...

oh yeah and wearing your hair DOWN is so wrong.

It's really a shame because overall it was well shot, and the costumes were fairly good. They just clearly didn't have someone there saying "this goes here."  My other favorite was the man with his collar unbuttoned and a scarf tied inside it so every time his head turned he flashed a giant patch of skin.

Oh wow, you're right!

I blogged a while ago about terrible 18th century costumes (Marie Antoinette!) on the History Channel. You might find the screenshots amusing:

Oh damn, I meant to watch that, but forgot it was on...at least there's a bit of it on the site!

Who let the actors dress themselves? Come on now, there wasn't ONE person on set that knew which way to put a cap on someone's head?! Clearly, next time they do one of these mini documentaries they need to call US. Oh, and I enjoyed that guy with the scarf too. Lolz.

The hat is killing me!!! Tooooooo Funny lol!!!

You never let them alone to dress themselves. You end up with pants on backwards.. hats on backwards or upside down.. And you on your knees trying to fix their codpiece infront of very very large crowds. With the theater i'm working in now.. I've had to go so far as to put little red bows in the hats so they know thats the back.. ROFL :)

I waited to comment on this when I had time to watch the vidoes. But they're not videos, they're screen shots. D'oh!

*laughs at self*

Yes, the backwards cap is quite silly. Not as silly as the upside down corsets I've seen (OMG, someone posted wedding photos on costume_snark where the bride was wearing her corset upside down!!!), but still silly.
