I know I said I wasn't going to sew anything for Ft. Fred but I caved and made a new petticoat. I was worried about my wool dress dragging and getting dirty (we'll just leave out the part about not wanting to fix the crooked hem) so I decided to make a nice 100% machine sewn cotton petticoat to wear under it and polonaise up the back. Where closed front gowns ever polonaised? I haven't the foggiest...and if they weren't...I'm sticking my fingers in my ears and going "LA LA LA" if they were by all means share some documentation with me ;-)

Don't you like my regency stays under it?

and yes I DO in fact have documentation for the pink polka dots of all things...

It took me about an hour to make from start to finish, now I've spent twice that long pulling threads to square up this linen/cotton stripe I picked up for an apron at JoAnn's. I hate how you have to cut off 4 inches as the fabric comes in so crooked.

I've never seen a closed front gown worn looped up, so if anyone shares an example with you, I wanna know! ;) Pink polka dots, yay!

And isn't it wonderful how crooked 90% of the fabric is at Joann's? Good times. The prints are the worst, it's like they don't even try!

Yay, I love the new petticoat! The teal and pink together look sooo springy!

No, they weren't polonaised, BUT--there's hope yet! There are woodcut and print examples of women pulling their gown hems through their pocket slits for the same reason you are: to keep it out of the mud. So, not polonaised, per se, but certainly the same sort of thing.

I know it's not their fault, the machines that wind things on the bolt have presser foot drag, it's just really annoying to deal with later.

actually that's even better as then I don't have to figure out a way to polonaise it. Win-Win for me! now did they go up and over with the hem tucked inside or was the hem pulled up through the inside so it sticks out?

Hem pulled up through the inside. The best example I can think of right now is the red-and white striped dress in the Kyoto collection; it's open front, but you get the idea.
