The f word

I am having SERIOUS issues with the dreaded F word. FIT! No matter how many times I practice, no matter how down I think I've got it there's always a point where I end up swearing and throwing something across the room...not aided by the fact that it's nearly impossible to fit the section directly in the small of one's own back....It was perfect on the dress form..it's horrible on me.

The front isn't sooo terrible.
I think buttons and finishing the front edges will give it the stability it needs down the front. The real horror is the BACK!!!

I can't figure out how it should be laying. How do I make it smooth to the body and then flare out? Waist tape? Just take it in across the back? It's sooo frustrating to put it on take it off, put it on take it off. Especially since it was fine on the dress form so using Polly isn't going to help. Why can I always do this on other bodies but my own clothing always comes out so terrible?

Ive never worked a flared skirt like that, so I am not positive how helpful I will be. But to my eye, things look to be shifting upwards looking for room. This suggests to me that your flare over the hips is not wide enough for things to settle down, so I would let it out a little at the seams to give it more room.

And what sort of dress dummy do you have?

A waist tape.. attached at the back.. will help to hold down the small of your back. Remember that blue victorian jacket i have.. it's got a waist tape/belt to help with the flare.

I was trying to remember if that one had one. This thing is making me pull my hair out!

Do you think it needs to be taken in on the curved back seams as well? or just a waist tape

if the waist tape is still making it baggie.. then take it in at the back seams

I bone the curved seams, too, so you can try that. Good luck, and it's not even half as bad as you think!

you bone the curved seams down the back? I don't have spiral steel, but I'd think that would be the only thing that would follow the curves.

I do! You could use ridgeline/plastic boning for now until you can get some spiral steel and then swap it out. That's all I use.

Clarification: I bone from about the shoulder blade to just above where the bodice back starts to flare out.

oooooh thanks! I'll pick up some ridgeline at work tomorrow. I usually use cable ties and they're much thicker so I don't think they'd curve at all, but I bet the thinner ridgeline would. I hate feeling like a garment has issues and I know there are issues and I can't get them fixed.
